International Fisheries Conferences
The Pacific Rim Fisheries Conference series, held in alternating Pacific Rim countries, was established to promote a better understanding of fisheries policy and business practices for the mutual benefit of Pacific Rim nations. Founding nations of this conference series are Canada, Japan, the People's Republic of China, the Republic of Korea, Russia and the United States. Invited regions and international fishery organizations participating in past conferences include Indonesia, Malaysia, Norway, the Philippines, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, FAO Globefish of Rome, Italy, FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, INFOFISH-Malaysia, the International Pacific Halibut Commission, the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission, the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC), the North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES), and the Pacific Salmon Commission.
These conferences bring together the highest levels of fisheries government and industry leaders to examine world fisheries policy issues and to promote the development and rational use of the Pacific Rim fisheries resource. The Pacific Rim Fisheries Program has organized and administered the previous conferences held in Anchorage 1989 and 1999, Vladivostok in 1991 and 2002, Beijing in 1994, Tokyo in 1997, and Busan in 2004 and Hanoi in 2006.
The Ninth Pacific Rim Fisheries Conference will focus on recent changes in Pacific fisheries and their impact on the fishing industry. These include: changes in
fisheries are the result of a number of different factors including a changing environment; shifting marine resource availability; adaptation of fishing industries to new challenges
and changing markets; and rapidly evolving enforcement regimes. The impact of these changes has resulted in the imposition of greater accountability
by international orgainizations and regional fisheries management organizations that will require greater cooperation among Pacific fishing nations. In addition,
as the global demand for fish products increases, ensuring a stable seafood supply will become increasingly important for nations of this region.
